The history behind our carols and lessons service

The service of Carols and Lessons was created by the Bishop of Truro, Edward Benson, who was later to become the Archbishop of Canterbury. The service first took place at 10:00pm on Christmas Eve in 1880 in a large wooden building that was being used as a temporary Cathedral, as the main Truro Cathedral was being rebuilt.  The idea travelled around the United Kingdom, but was made famous by the choir from King’s College, Cambridge, who in 1918 performed the service as a way celebrating the end of the First World War.

The service, traditionally, has nine Bible readings (or lessons), that tell the Christmas story, with one or two carols between each lesson.  Our service is a variation on that theme, using nine Bible readings, beginning with Genesis and God’s blessing upon humanity, and concluding with the great affirmation that God has come amongst us in the person of Jesus.

Our other special Christmas events, not to be missed:

  • Thursday 19th December : 6:30pm – Blue Christmas Service

  • Tuesday 24th December : 11;30pm – Christmas Eve Watchnight Service
